To build up sports development among the ROTC cadets, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), in collaboration with the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Department of National Defense (DND), initiated an orientation this morning (June 30) at the CASS Theater Room, TSU Main Campus.

Representatives of partner government agencies and sports directors of higher education institutions (HEIs) from Northern and Central Luzon attended the activity in preparation for the upcoming Philippine ROTC Games (PRG) 2023.

During the discussion, Coach Ana Dulce Yango, CHED Sports Development and Management Programs project leader, said the program would strengthen the ROTC cadets through sports.

"Sports is one avenue where we develop physical fitness, mental, psychological, emotional, and social well-being, which is mandated in NSTP," she said.

Yango added that PRG would also serve as a breeding ground for athletes who could represent the Philippines in international sports competitions.

TSU President Dr. Arnold E. Velasco expressed his support for the PRG as he agreed it would unleash the ROTC cadets' potential to become well-rounded athletes.

“As the President of TSU, I strongly support all the programs of CHED. Yung ganitong competition (sports) ay magbibigay ng magandang resulta, of which made-develop ang mga mag-aaral natin. Hindi lang 'yung essence ng panalo, kundi mabuo ang camaraderie at pagkakaibigan," Pres. Velasco said.

"Eventually, ito 'yung magiging dahilan para makapag-produce tayo ng mga graduates who will complete not only in the Philippines but also in other countries,” he added.

PRG registration procedures, as well as the rules and guidelines, were also discussed with partner agencies and HEI sports directors in an open forum.

Meanwhile, the afternoon session at the TSU Gymnasium was graced by Senator Francis Tolentino, who conceptualized the ROTC sports competition.

"The idea that we started when we thought of a way to revitalize the ROTC program enabled us to craft this ROTC Games," Senator Tolentino said.

He encouraged the ROTC cadets of TSU to focus on honing their potential in sports as a platform for bringing glory to the country.

“Bakit hindi natin simulan sa ROTC pa lang hanggang mapakapag-produce tayo ng isang Hidilyn Diaz, Eumer Marciano, Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio and other great athletes”, he added.

He also commended the agencies involved for their teamwork in pioneering the first ROTC Games.

Athletics, arnis, basketball, boxing, e-sports, kickboxing, and volleyball will be part of the inaugural year's schedule from July 31 to August 6, 2023.

Ms. Lora Yusi, CHED Regional Office III OIC Director, also attended the second part of the program. (jlmm-OPA)
